It's been over a decade since Muscovite Janina Wolkow brought her successful sushi concept Sumosan to Mayfair and it remains just as successful as ever, not only because Londoners have developed a need for all things Nipponese, but particularly because it offers a high-quality and consistent product in one of London's most luscious arenas.

Situated just next to Brown's Hotel, Sumosan channels the genteel aura of its area with a calm, relaxed design scheme employing the neutrality of cream and caramel colours in order to bring its starry clientele into the foreground, many of whom have already made it their local (Jade Jagger, Kate Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Will Smith have already attested to Sumosan's superior sushi). The light and airy feel of the dining room is a nice counterpoint to many of the capital's other destination eateries.

Another thing that happily comes into the foreground is the food, which is phenomenal. Provenance is key and the servings are far from parsimonious. Where other restaurants tend to be a bit cute when it comes to an ingredient like lobster, Sumosan is bountiful. If you're interested in sampling a range of Japanese delicacies, be careful that you don't fill up too much on delicious dishes like their lobster salad or dover sole, as there are a variety of plates that simply must be experienced. These include the T&T Roll (tuna roll with white truffle sauce), tempura rock shrimp, teppanyaki and some exceptional desserts, for instance the green tea cheesecake and white chocolate fondant.

The staff at Sumosan are knowledgeable and attentive. If you feel that wine can be a bit overwhelming with Japanese cuisine, they are happy to provide pointers on what selections from their excellent cocktail list complements each dish. Additionally, if you're in the mood to decompress in a discreet but cool bar, investigate their exclusive lounge downstairs.
