The Dead Dolls House seemingly started on a whim, temporarily taking over a Hoxton Square townhouse, and now appears to be spreading across London like the Great Fire. Following the opening of The Dead Dolls Club in the Arch in Bethnal Green (worth a visit if you're in the area), Adam Towner and Katy Gray Rosewarne (aka Mr & Mrs Doll) have put Islington in their crosshairs. The target after that is allegedly Peckham.
The Upper Street townhouse is an ideal medium for expressing The Dolls House's quirky and eclectic spirit. As we entered the ground floor area and made our way beyond the bustling bar, we were greeted with the sounds of standards from a live jazz band playing to an enthusiastic crowd.
The Dolls House has a certain Beatrix Potter vibe - like you're navigating a warren. It's a mashup of edgy industrial accents and Victorian shabby chic gracenotes. In one room you might find blue velvet banquettes and exposed brick. In another, whitewashed walls might be painted with faux bookshelves, Grecian urns and plaques.
There's a restaurant upstairs with a buttoned-up gold and blue colour scheme and a disco ball situated within a chandelier. Here we enjoyed some amazing cocktails, particularly the pisco sour, which gets top marks for authenticity. After a couple of these it quickly becomes clear how cool the Doll's House is.
