You'd think the Maybourne Group would be willing to rest on its laurels with The Connaught Bar, The Fumoir Bar at Claridge's and The Blue Bar at The Berkeley but, well, you'd be wrong. They're newest entry, The Berkeley Bar & Terrace, is every bit as beautiful as its very comely brothers and sisters. The 40-cover bar was designed by Irishman Bryan O'Sullivan and to say it's easy on the eyes would be an understatement.
Adjoining rooms are cloaked in walnut wood panelling taken from a single, three century old tree from the Fulbeck estate, which has been buffed and varnished to make the detail of the grain. Above that, the walls are adorned with a pastoral plasterwork frieze then painted over in a rich cream. A series of brutalist arches connects each space, with a snug in the back featuring a stunning abstract mural of women's faces.
All in, the room is exceptionally turned out and inviting, and the cocktails are some of the best in the capital. The Berkeley Bar & Terrace is an instant classic; luxury writ large.
