Mr Fogg's Tavern - Covent Garden, Covent Garden

When Mr Fogg's opened its doors on Berkeley Street on the exact address named in HG Wells' famous novel Around The World in Eighty Days, we initially didn't know what to make of it, but after a couple of visits were swiftly convinced that it was one of our favourite cocktail bars in London, offering an immersive experience and excellent bartending in equal stead. So we had high expectations of its sister bar when it opened its doors last week. Expectations that were handily met.

Situated on St Martin's Lane and spread over two floors, this newest venture comprises of a tavern on the ground floor and a gin parlour upstairs. In keeping with the original, Mr Fogg's Tavern has a story behind it - the eponymous hero has inherited the property from his recently departed aunt Gertrude, who made him promise to open a tavern to accommodate all of her friends. There you'll find real ales, mother's ruin gin cocktails and grog served in traditional tankards and pewter cups, as well as an array of hearty foods hailing back to the heady days of Escoffier.

It's the upstairs room that really wins our heart though - it's a finely wrought, beautifully finished jewelbox with its own discreet entrance. It's densely populates with artifacts from Aunt Gertrude, ostensibly a famous actress, because there are costumes, props, wigs and old scripts in abundance, as well as some of Mr Fogg's trademark artifacts - stuffed animals, maps, etc.

Duncan Stirling and Charlie Gilkes certainly have a knack for creating engaging, fun environments in which to knock back a tipple, and Mr Fogg's Tavern is no exception. Prepare yourself for expert mixology in an elegant, eccentric setting.
