There is a special category of bars; the kind of place where you walk in and suddenly feel that your city is worthy of your pride, that it has taken a step forward, that with this particular opening, things are on the up-and-up. The bar at Jason Atherton's newest London launch City Social is categorically that type of place. Situated on the 24th floor of Tower 42 on Broad Street, it boasts a stunning panorama of many of London's most famous landmarks, with dramatic views of St Paul's, The Gherkin and The Shard. However, the interior is also a sight to behold - a handsome, dark, masculine room with classic parquet flooring, yawningly deep leather booths with brass art deco desk lamps, and ceiling panelling so high-shine that they add a second dimension of spaciousness to the room. As one would expect from the Atherton cohort, the drinks menu is worthy of its grandiose trappings. Bar Manager Gareth Evans has orchestrated a punchy, playful array of cocktails, with the addition of a couple of sharing options - including the In-Cider Trading (Somerset 10 year cider brandy, Kamm & Sons, Cocchi Rosa, St Germain). Watch this space - it's likely to become one of the main contenders in the City scene.
