Chez Chow - Mayfair , London

North Audley Cantine has always been one of our favourite Mayfair haunts for laidback cocktails in a louche setting, so we were a little wary when we heard that their fabulous basement bar was receiving a refit. However, our misapprehensions seems to have been misspent, as the newly installed Chez Chow is an utter charmer. Named for NAC owner Jeremy Coste's pooch Teddy the Chow Chow, the intimate space has been given a seductive facelift, with a story thread woven through following the dog's peripatetic wanderings to some of the globe's more exotic locales.

There was a noticeable crackle of excitement in the room, which was teeming with fashionable Londoners, bolstered by an eclectic array of music from the PA. Chinese and Parisian tchotchke is interspersed throughout, however our attention was drawn more to the smoky mirrors, distressed pressed tin ceiling, retrofitted brass cistern tables and potted bamboo plants. The cocktails were some of the best we've had in the area, competitive with Mayfair heavy-hitters like Mr Fogg's and the Luggage Room. Furthermore, it's a flexible spot, suited both for casual after work cocktails or putting on the dog before a big night.
