It‘s been a while since a big name NYC restaurant has touched down in London and the Bulgari Hotel has imported one of the biggest to their ground floor dining room. Sette is the first European project from Scarpetta, one of the hottest tickets in town and probably the best Italian in Manhattan‘s trendy NoMad district. Sette is taken from the Italian word seven. Whether it‘s a lucky number remains to be seen but on a Tuesday night visit it seemed like all of the right cards were falling.

Situated in the grand subterranean dining room that formerly housed Rivea by Alain Ducasse, Sette was designed by illustrious aesthetic visionary Thomas Juul-Hanson, who wears the laurels for creating the Scarpetta location in Manhattan. Blending natural and industrial materials, Juul-Hanson has created a mid-century modern masterwork paying homage to the Madison Avenue heyday of the 1950s and 60s with swooping luxurious banquettes, bankers chandelier and a statement wine display.

We kicked off the meal with tuna ‘susci‘ served with marinated carrot, microgreens and preserved truffle, which was as flavourful as it was delicate. Charred asparagus with poached egg, summer truffle and asparagus puree was served with hearty country bread. Our main of black cod was bolstered by a mellow tomato confit with caramelised fennel and a fillet of Scottish grass-fed beef was complemented by a beautiful summer vegetable fricassee with parmesan and a bone marrow butter. We wrapped up the meal with a stunning espresso budino served alongside salted caramel and hazelnut gelato with a chocolate biscotto.

It was a joyous meal and one we‘d love to revisit. Sette looks poised for perfection.
