Kensington has witnessed a culinary resurgence of late with One Kensington and Dirty Bones opening and Pavilion scheduled to launch later in May. The former (One Kensington) is a lounge/bar/restaurant opened in a Grade II listed building on the High Street by the Tamarind Collection, which boasts a couple of the world's finest Indian restaurants in its stable. However, for this newest launch, Chef Massimiliano Blasone of Apsleys at the Lanesborough has created a menu to rival a Roman trattoria, and in a grand setting at that. Housed in what was formerly a bank building, One Kensington features clear views of the park through double height windows, lofty vaulted ceilings, classic wood panelling and striking turquoise leather upholstery. It also features immaculate service and exquisite culinary offerings. These include OK's seafood salad, with de-shelled langoustine, tender scallops, mackerel, seared tuna, avocado, broccoli and edamame pimped out with an eye-popping trio of particolored tomato coulis and a salmoriglio vinaigrette. An elegant, buttery housemade foie was mated with a fruit compote and toasted brioche. This was followed by sea bass roasted within a salt crust and an al dente ratatouille of braised chicory and oven baked kale. It was served with a multitude of delicious sides, including al dente carrots, creamy mash and buttery spinach. We ended the evening with the assiette dessert sampler, and were treated to a delightful threesome comprising of a light and refreshing tarte au citron, a Black Forest diplomat, and an incredible Araguani ganache made with muscovado and orange essence. One Kensington is a grown-up restaurant, yet never crosses over into being staid or stuffy. We left feeling immensely pleased with our meal and the addition of One Kensington to the neighbourhood.
