For entertaining clients in the City, there's never anything quite as bang-on appropriate as a steakhouse, and there just happens to be one nestled off Bishopsgate near Devonshire terrace that would contend with some of New York's beefiest staples. New Street Grill was opened by enterprising restaurant group D&D and exhibits the same trademark sleekness for which its brothers and sisters are renowned. In fact, there are a few siblings adjacent, as NSG is flanked by the Fish Market to its west and Old Bengal Bar to its east - which is handy if you're interested in continuing your night with a few postprandial cocktails.

New Street Grill is situated in what was formerly the City's oldest surviving warehouse, an 18th Century depot constructed by the East India Company to store spices, tea, cigars and port. The current iteration of the Old Bengal Warehouse retains a number of the building's original features including wrought-iron pillars and exposed brickwork. The room itself boasts a low wattage ambience that's synonymous with popular steak joints from Paris and across the pond. Fringed with chocolate button-back banquettes and burgundy walls, it exudes the kind of dimly lit ambience ideally suited for intimate liaisons, swapping secrets, or having a boisterous evening.

The main event, however, is the steak. New Street Grill sources its superior cuts from various corners of the globe, including Black Aberdeen Angus Beef from Turton's Farm in Devon, grass-fed, 28 day dry-aged West Country Black Angus, and corn-fed 40 day-aged USDA IBP Certified Prime Black Angus, which is a mouthful to say as well as to swallow. It's Josper grilled, which imbues the beef with a punchy charcoal flavour whilst sealing in the juiciness with a hot burn.

The steak can be padded out with a variety of starters and sides, including hearty native oysters, baked scallops served in the shell, lobster mac and cheese, and triple cooked chips. If you're watching your waistline you can opt out of the bovine calorie blitz for dishes including roasted red leg partridge and Dover sole. Puddings hew to the best of British recipes. Sherry trifle, burnt Cambridge cream and an apple tart all make an appearance. Or, if you have the appetite of an ubermensch, conclude your meal with the cheeseboard. There are over 350 options on the wine list compiled by master sommelier Nicolas Clerc who is an adept matchmaker if there ever was one, and if you are enamoured with his selection, the New Street Wine Shop, another D&D venture, is just down the street and carries the majority of bottles available in the Grill.
