Mortimer House Kitchen - Fitzrovia, London

The way people work has changed over the years, with many people choosing to eschew the office in favour of a co-working space. Mortimer House is one of the finest examples - a semi-private club with six floors of office areas, a members' lounge, gym, yoga/pilates studio, bar and restaurant. The latter is named Mortimer House Kitchen, and serves up a Mediterranean menu to both the club's members and the hungry denizens of Fitzrovia. We popped in to apprise ourselves of its quality…

The room itself is airy and contemporary with a relaxed, informal feel that's nonetheless quive classy. Replete with light tones, the room boasts wooden floors and neutral coloured sofas and chairs complete with subtle ornaments and cream-hued hanging lights. The large blue rugs stand out, as does the white marble bar situated in the restaurant and the chef's table at the far end of the room next to the vintage copper kitchen. Although it's small it's not overcrowded and offers a tranquil atmosphere. During the summer the al fresco area on Mortimer becomes quite popular.

In March 2019 Lello Favuzzi took over the kitchen. Having formerly worked with Francesco Mazzei at L'Anima, he brings a refined talent to the menu, shuffling Italian staples with wider Italian influences to dizzying effect. Our meal ran like a greatest hits playlist. Burnt carrots with tahini and fennel pollen as well as charcoal cauliflower with yoghurt and za'atar evinced a sexy smoulder. Courgette spaghetti was immaculately finished, it's perfectly al dente tendrils shot through with pistachio pesto and smoked risotto. A grilled veal cutlet was perched atop a hearty Sicilian vegetable caponata which didn't disappoint. We wrapped it up with a mint ice cream freshly prepared by Lello himself which was so good it could make him big bucks as a single item business.

Mortimer House Kitchen is a fine addition to Mortimer House, the perfect pitstop for physical and spiritual restoration.
