The Beaumont - Mayfair, London

You'd expect a hotel orchestrated by the team behind The Wolseley to be pitch perfect in every sense, and you'd be correct. The Beaumont, situated on Balderton Street overlooking Brown Hart Gardens within eyeshot of Selfridges, offers a masterclass in pre-war, art deco elegance. Jeremy King and Chris Corbin have put their very talented heads together to create a property that features everything the cosmopolitan urbanite could desire, with an excellent restaurant, beautiful bars, a barber shop, salon, private dining room and spa complete with hammam.

The hotel channels the free spirit of the Roaring Twenties, veering more towards America than their traditionally mittel-European restaurants such as The Delaunay and Fischer's. You could almost imagine literary luminaries like Fitzgerald or Hemingway strolling down The Beaumont's slick walkways which are adorned in original artwork, rare books and antique furniture. Built in 1926, the Grade II listed building really harnesses the spirit of central London, with a nod to the contemporary in Antony Gormley's sculpture/suite room - a block-like form that clings to the front of the hotel.

There are 73 rooms in The Beaumont, each one with its own king-sized bed, decked out in a tonal light grey colour scheme with plenty of smoky mirrors and dark-wood furniture. There's a nice interplay between modernity and classic styling, with plenty of well-thought out touches like the complimentary soft drinks in the mini bar, homemade confectionary and fruit upon arrival. The spa is accordingly high-spec, offering a fully equipped gym, sauna, steamroom and hammam.

There's no shortage of diversions to keep you busy here. Of all of them, one of our favourites was The Colony Grill Room, which we will cover separately. Suffice to say it was a lovely take on American classics. Otherwise, get lost in one of the bars. The American Bar, which also goes as Jimmy's, specialises in classic cocktails. The Cub Room, which is only open to hotel guests, offers complimentary coffees and papers alongside a menu of snacks and drinks.

Taken together, The Beaumont is certainly of the calibre that you'd expect of its address.
