We've met whisky aficionados but never quite like the ones at Milroy's of Spitalfields, the second site from London's oldest whisky specialist. Standing apart from the wingchair crowd that generate an exclusive, stuffy air around the spirit, the staff at Milroy's, led by MD Simo Simpson, are keen to delve into hard-earned troves of knowledge but perhaps even more keen to do so in an inclusive, engaging manner. As such, they've created a pilgrimage-worthy, four-floored temple to John Barleycorn.

The venue packs in everything a whisky-lover could want. Case in point, over 1000 bottles from all corners of the planet, including selections from Scotland, Japan, the US, South Africa and Australia. This is to be found on the ground floor whisky bar. In the basement is  The Proofing Room cocktail bar (try their pre-batched honey-lashed Golden Highball), on the first floor there's a private members' club complete with cigar terrace, and on the second floor a tasting room perfectly laid out for corporate events. It's no minor undertaking.

We have to admit that we were more than taken care of at Milroy's. Staff members took us on a journey, with stop-offs in Seattle for Westland single malt, Campeltown for a mind-bending Glen Scotia Festival Malts 2013 Limited Edition and Speyside for a 17 year old expression of Craigellachie. Blue humour was interwoven through the experience and we were made to feel right at home. In short, Milroy's of Spitalfields offered one of the most entertaining whisky experiences we've had to date. We highly recommend it for the spirit-obsessed.
