If you are looking for a chic, understated and elegant Japanese restaurant, then TOKii is just that. The restaurant is situated in Prince Atatoki hotel in Marylebone, which was given a £3 million makeover back in 2019.
The dining room was very much what you would expect. Brilliantly-hued sprigs of cherry blossom erupted from a kintsugi-style vase. The flooring was crafted from honey-coloured woods, the ceiling was punctuated by sections of slatted beams and the tables were made of simple slate. Finally, high-top stools hem in a gold-plated sushi counter where itamaes slice and roll with rapt attention. We ordered a selection of Japanese-inspired cocktails and eagerly awaited our meal.
A chilled tuna tartare was perked up with ginger and miso and served with creamy avocado and crunchy lotus crisps. A ceviche of scallop was studded with orange, spring onions, chilli and sesame. Shrimp tempura was crisp under tooth without a whisper of extraneous oil. Hot dishes of miso-glazed black cod and tiger prawns with chili, lime and a miso aioli didn't disappoint, but we were truly won over by robata-grilled aubergine with chilli and ginger as well as the nigiri and sushi omakase.
TOKii, opened by Japan's famous Prince Hotel Group, certainly lives up to its pedigree.
