Crossrail changed the area at the foot of Tottenham Court Road forever, closing down a clutch of Korean eateries along with cult restaurants like Fernandez & Wells and Smoking Goat. But as 2019 unfurls, we're beginning to witness a culinary spring in the area, with plenty of plans afoot to reinvigorate the surrounding space. VIVI is the most exciting of them all. Perched atop the Centre Point opposite Dominion Theatre, it showcases the very best of classic British dining.

VIVI is quite large, accommodating 300 people across four separate areas. The Dining Room is open throughout the day serving breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner. The Gallery is less formal with long sharing tables whilst the Liquid Lounge is open from 8am serving a health-focused menu. We decamped in The Bar, pitching up on duck egg blue high-tops and enjoying Pink Floyd Rhubarb and Sweet Nothing cocktails atop the gold-finished countertop.

We chose from the a la carte menu which put fresh, seasonal ingredients together to create dishes inspired by the 1960s. Creamy Cornish crab was complemented with crushed avocado and cut with Granny Smith apple and devilled vinaigrette. Prawn cocktails with brown bread and butter was by-the-book and quietly brilliant. Chicken Kiev was skilfully prepared with a nice hen and accompanied by braised lettuce and mash. Lobster Thermidor was stewed with duchess potatoes and watercress, whilst Madras roasted monkfish found a mate in spinach and cauliflower bhaji. We wrapped the meal up with a millionaire's chocolate bar served with chocolate sorbet and tuile, treacle tart with clotted cream, black forest, apple and rhubarb crumble.
