A cursory glance through Google search results will reveal that The Marksman in Shoreditch is one of the most celebrated public houses in all of the United Kingdom, with the attendant plaudits to boot. Tom Harris (previously of St John) and Jon Rotheram (of Jamie Oliver's Fifteen) put their heads together to create a local spot which ticks all of the boxes, making it one of E2's most popular spots for everything from a pint of ale to a pie par excellence, with a stunning selection of wines and a modern British menu that evinces both restraint and precision.

The pub downstairs is a masterwork in dark woods, populated by both east end originals and newer entries to the neighbourhood. It's a great place to grab a bevvie and some snacks. In the hindquarters of the area there's a raised area where guests can experience the entire menu. Upstairs is a separate dining room with whitewashed walls, pendant ship's lighting, oxblood banquettes, a particoloured floor and even a roof terrace area that becomes one of the hottest spots in the hood during the summer months. After a half pint of local pale ale we were primed for a long, leisurely lunch.

It was delivered with élan. The barley and beef bun has received accolades across the field and gets pride of place at its own pop-up stall in Victoria Market Hall. Suffice to say, it's a must-order. The smoked cod's roe and radish is a creamy but bracing counterpoint. Mussels and sea beet on toast is a symphony of fat and starch. The pies, no matter which one you choose, are some of the best in the country. We're particularly fond of the beef shin and walnut as well as the pheasant, leek and truffle. Similarly, the potatoes are unmissable: julienned, reformed into rectangular cubes, deep fried and served with a burnt onion mayonnaise. The brown butter and honey tart has a cult following all its own, but other desserts are equally worthy.

Basically, we can't say enough about The Marksman. It's a real showstopper and worth travelling to for a meal, even if you're on the other side of town.
