It's always good to see a breath of fresh air blown into one of our favourite restaurants, which is exactly what happened with the new Sumosan Twiga, opened by international restaurateur Janina Wolcow and former F1 boss Flavio Briatore to join their growing empire with venues in Moscow, Monaco and Dubai. For their newest, they've upped sticks from Mayfair's Albemarle St and opened shop on 65 Sloane Street - an address which has played host to a fair share of high-flying eateries - including Alain Ducasse, Jamie Oliver, Ian Pengelley (House of Ho) and Bjorn van der Horst (now at Kojawan) and most recently Azerbaijani restaurant Baku

omprising of a lounge, a restaurant and a bar, two chefs have been employed to prepare two separate cuisines, with Ferdinando Palomba looking after the Italian fare and Konstantin Tskhay the Japanese. Spacious, luxuriant interiors have been designed by Michele Bonane, with a monochromatic entrance giving way to a contemporary dining room which subtly amalgamates Asian and European design accents including stucco and wooden boiserie, dark wood and alabaster.

We took our seats and readied ourselves for an onslaught of excellent Japanese cuisine. The first dish to arrive was an excellent truffle hamachi tiradito inlaid with black truffle and sliced so razor thin that it languidly curled around our chopsticks. We also enjoyed a plate of fat pink prawns spiked with wasabi and served with a delicate salsa of golden passion fruit. Rice 'pizza' was like a crunchy chirashi, the base layer of crisp rice topped with a medley of spiced salmon, cucumber and chilli garlic salsa.

Anyone who visited the original restaurant will know that their sushi platter is required eating, especially the T&T Roll, a marriage of toro and truffle that takes no prisoners. For mains, choose from an excellent Alaskan black cod with miso which would put rivals at Nobu and Zuma to the test. We were exceptionally happy with our visit at Sumosan, and with the new nightclub on its way, it looks poised to remain one of the hottest openings in the area for years to come.
