Chef Alan Bird spent his career at some of the biggest names in London's restaurant industry creating dishes that quickly became synonymous with the venues (perhaps you've heard of the Shepherd's Pie at The Ivy?). Now it's his turn for brand recognition - and he looks well poised for it at Bird of Smithfield - a five storey eatery, drinking destination and straight-up classy hangout within spitting distance of Smithfield Market. The basement houses a Fluid Movement-powered cocktail den billed as The Birdcage which serves up mind-blowing concoctions including absinthe frappes and chamomile-infused whisky sours. Heading upwards, the bar/lounge area boasts an airy casual atmosphere where guests can gourmandise on delicacies including a burger topped with smoked brisket and Lincolnshire poacher or a salad of pork cheek with crackling and crispy bacon. Above that is the main dining room, perfect for seasonal British cuisine and one of London's best Sunday roasts. Continuing skywards, there's a slick private events space and a rooftop terrace bar with bird's eye vistas of the Market and beyond. One thing's for sure, this isn't a fly-by-night operation. Mr Bird is here to stay, and what an enticing nest he's assembled!
