The Cleveland Arms - Paddington
August 8, 2019
The Cleveland Arms has been around for a while, 166 years to be exact, offering one of Paddington’s best public house experiences, but it’s only recently entered the sphere of culinary excellence with the hire of Elisabeth Passédat. A former contestant on Masterchef: The Professionals in 2018, Elizabeth formerly rattled the pans at the acclaimed Aster in Victoria alongside Helena Puolakka as well as stints at Pierre Koffman at The Berkeley and Bar Boulud at The Mandarin Oriental. We dropped in to see how she was working out…
The Cleveland Arms is the consummate pub and could sit easily in a Dickensian novel. There’s a veritable forest of oak and dark wood spread throughout: floors, wainscoting, tables, chairs, panelling, bar stools and the bar itself. Otherwise, it’s painted in dark green with Victorian era portraiture adorning its walls, brass wall lighting and old school pendant lighting. Quite simply, it’s a achingly beautiful pub.
We kicked our meal off with burrata, Daterrino tomatoes, basil and almond pesto – the giant orbs of cheese awash with the nutty pesto. For mains, a summer truffle tagliatelle was intermixed with creamy egg yolk and parmesan, while a lamb rump offered a masterclass in richness, served with jersey royal and umami de mar. We wrapped up the meal with a pair of impeccable desserts. The tart of the day was a prune and tonga bean affair with vanilla ice cream. A Virunga milk chocolate mousse with shortbread and Chantilly cream played a pretty tune.
Cleveland Arms is definitely worth the journey. Probably the best pub in Paddington.
