Entering Marcus Wareing‘s newest culinary destination is like entering a slipstream to the past. Everything from the lofty height of the gold-leafed, hand-painted ceiling to the marble columns to the Victorian-inspired food recall the eras of Jane Austen and George Eliot, and it‘s only when you glance outside through the grand windows at the stream of vehicles outside that you confirm your place in contemporary times. The attention to detail in creating this environment makes the guest feel eons away from the city‘s hustle and flow - an altogether soothing and satisfying experience.
The architecture was envisioned by the restaurant‘s namesake Sir Gilbert Scott and finished in 1873 -a huge renovation over the past few years has restored its original majesty. The ever ubiquitous David Collins Studio has succeeded in the difficult feat of revamping the iconic Gothic Victorian design without any contemporary aspects appearing incongruous. The bar is quite simply stunning, for private dining options there‘s a lovely table which seats up to eighteen or opt for the ten-cover ‘Kitchen Table‘, a sexy semi-circular vantage from which you can catch the electric buzz of the kitchen.
