Momo opened during the heady days of the late nineties and immediately captured the hearts and palates of the likes of Madonna, Kate Moss and Tracey Emin. Now, almost a decade and a half later, it is still the beating heart of London‘s Middle East. As the waiters wash your hands in rosewater, dance between tables and serve plates steaming and redolent of cinnamon, ginger and turmeric, it‘s easy to let your mind wander like a Dervish amongst the intricately detailed North African trappings and forget that you‘re only an alley away from one of the capital‘s most frenzied streets. Restaurateur Mourad Mazouz has created one of the most convincing dining concepts of his generation and it‘s plain to see why it has long reigned as one of London‘s most sought-after spots.
Entering Momo is like entering a veritable Aladdin‘s cave of bric-a-brac. Maghrebi lanterns haunt the space with a sultry, dusky ambience. Stone walls , filigreed window screens, low-slung seating and bedizened cushions all recall One Thousand and One Nights opulence. But whereas treasure-hunting is usually a solo effort, the prize you will find here is the bright and brassy atmosphere they have created, the rich food and the fun to be shared with those sitting around you; and with a restaurant, café, outdoor terrace and basement bar and disco, there‘s sure to be something to suit everybody‘s taste.
The food matches the atmosphere in vibrance. Begin with one of their excellent cocktails like the Momo Special (vodka, fresh mint, gum syrup, soda water) or the Rum Mule (rum, ginger beer and lime) for a pre-prandial kick. The wine list has various Moroccan options alongside pricier heavy-hitters, all of which complement the food from which you can choose between traditional and more Western-influenced plates. Get seduced by sumptuous starters like harira (the dish traditionally eaten to break the Ramadan fast) or inventive duck bourek with apple chutney. For mains choose from delicious tagines or the Couscous Momo which includes lamb shank, Josper-grilled lamb skewers and merguez. Dessert doesn‘t disappoint with the menu offering dishes like deep fried crème brulee or a maple pecan parfait.
Momo‘s is a great time and there‘s a lot to stick around for post-dinner. Investigate the terrace for some shisha, or retire downstairs for live music or dancing. There‘s a reason why it‘s become such a staple London institution as large swathes of A-listers routinely choose it as an introduction to a fantastic night out! Innerplace members and guests will now receive complimentary champagne when dining at Momo. Please contact us at [email protected] for bookings and see ‘Club of the Week‘ for Momo‘s weekend offerings.
