For those who prefer their gambling to be cut from a different cloth, The Hippodrome has introduced an American concept to its basement bar - Lola‘s Underground Casino - which splices the Las Vegas gambling experience with a New Orleans speakeasy concept complete with burlesque performers. Lola‘s is situated twenty feet underneath the main stage at The Hippodrome where the animal trainers, scene shifters, theatre management and performers would historically prepare for the shows. These days it plays host to an excellent gin palace cocktail bar, high octane gaming tables, a barber shop, and go-go dancers performing choreographed routines in a central tiger cage.
If the prospect of that awakens a hunger in the belly, we recommend that you direct your attention upstairs to the Heliot, the casino‘s main restaurant, which serves a hell of a steak for incredibly competitive prices. The ambience is definitely casino-esque, overlooking the main gaming floor and the stage, but the beef would hold punches with some of the more celebrated steakhouses in the capital. It‘s all USDA Prime here, featuring heavy marbling and a more buttery, sweet flavour than you find in grass-fed cow. Whether it‘s a New York strip, a rib on the bone or a T-Bone, it will pair up beautifully with the alluring array of sauces and sides on the menu, including the uber indulgent Millionaire‘s mac and cheese, a sumptuous amalgam of gruyere, macaroni, duck egg and generous slices of black truffle. Regardless of how carnivorous your appetite is, you‘ll have it sated upstairs at the Heliot.
