Natural wine polarised London when it first arrived on the scene, but any oenophile in the know understands that whether it's low intervention or has sulfur added, the quality comes down to the winemaker, not the process itself. The Remedy, however, is one of the best places to get a taste of the good stuff in the W1 area. Perched on the northern side of Cleveland Street in Fitzrovia, it's a busy popular spot for people who want to kick back after hours or even enjoy a cheeky glass midday.
Renowned for its oyster happy hours and painstakingly curated wine list, The Remedy has now branched out with an all-day menu which far surpassed our expectations. We went on a Thursday night and it was teeming with a cool crowd. The Remedy is ideal for a casual date spot. Tiny and intimate, the staff seem committed to make sure everyone was having a good time, with Daft Punk tracks piped over the PA.
We were happy to sit back and receive recommendations. For the month of February they were focusing on wines from the Jura in the northeast of France, and insisted that we try the Poulsard, a light red wine with a bit of carbon dioxide creating a gentle fizz which turned out to be the perfect complement to bright green and juicy nocellera olives and salt and pepper almonds. This was soon followed up by a charcuterie board with Comte, a special cheese from Jura, cured meats and nduja croquettes.
We chased the Poulsard with an Acustic which was more of a traditional, full-bodied red. It went beautifully with an unctuous amalgam of handmade gnocchi and sautéed girolles - the seasonal mushrooms were substantially meaty and wedded nicely with the al dente pasta. A plate of chunky chargrilled octopus served with preserved tomatoes, samphire and black olives was a little less earthy but no less tasty.
The Remedy fills in an important gap in the central London scene. It's the type of wine bar you might find in Hackney, nestled in the middle of Fitzrovia. If you're looking for amazing natural wines in a cool setting, it's a shoo-in.
